2009 Dodge Challenger Specs & Information

Here is what we know about the 2009 Dodge Challenger so far.  The highly anticipated 2009 Dodge Challenger will share a updated version of the LX platform, which currently is the Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum, and Dodge Charger platform, and will be re-designated the LY platform.  The new version of the challenger will be a 2-door coupe, just like 60's era Dodge Challengers. As of now, there are tentative plans to produce around 70,000 Challengers for the 2009 model year, but as well all know, those plans can change quickly.  Dodge has also announced the addition of the lower priced R/T and SE Challenger models for the 2009 model year. The move came following the launch of the SRT-8 model earlier for the 2008 Dodge model year.

The R/T, powered by an updated version of the 5.7 liter Hemi V8 also found in Charger R/T and 300C, is the first modern Hemi car available with a manual transmission: a six-speed unit, borrowed from the Viper platform. Dodge officially announced the SRT8 editions will also have the stick option.

All 5.7-liter HEMI's get a increase in horsepower for 2009 that amounts to 30 more HP along with an extra 8 pound-feet of torque, for totals of 370 horsepower and 398 pound-feet. This is accomplished via variable valve timing as well as a higher compression ratio, now 10.5 instead of 9.6. The switch to the Tremec six-speed in place of the five-speed auto on the R/T bumps those numbers further, to 375 and 404, respectively . Dodge estimates that fuel economy is 5 percent better as well, now rated by the EPA at 15 mpg in the city and 23 mph on the highway, with the stick burning one more mpg in the city. Acceleration to the 60 mph benchmark is under six seconds according to Dodge.
